Contributing factors to Obesity

Back to All

The SciPinion community evaluated various factors contributing to the obesity epidemic, revealing several key insights about the complex interplay of lifestyle, environmental, and societal factors:

The highest-rated contributors identified by our respondents were:

Physical inactivity and sedentary behavior, with 83% rating it as having a high or very high contribution to obesity. This was closely followed by consumption of ultra-processed foods, with over 70% rating it as a significant contributor. Sugar-sweetened beverages were identified as the third most impactful factor, with 78% rating it as having a high or very high contribution.

Interestingly, while genetic predisposition is often discussed, only 38% of respondents rated it as having a high or very high contribution. Indeed, modifiable lifestyle factors may play a more substantial role than genetic factors in the obesity epidemic.

Our community also identified several underappreciated factors, including poor sleep quality, chronic stress levels, and early life factors such as maternal nutrition and childhood feeding practices. Addressing obesity requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond traditional focus areas of diet and exercise.
