Opinions on Proposition 65

Back to All

California’s Proposition 65 requires businesses to warn consumers about chemical exposures that could cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. While intended to protect public health, debate continues about its effectiveness and impact on business. We asked our expert community to weigh in on whether Prop 65’s benefits outweigh its costs.

The responses paint an intriguing picture: The majority of experts expressed skepticism about Prop 65’s net benefit, with a notable concentration of responses on the “disagree” end of the spectrum. However, there remains a significant minority who strongly support the law’s impact.

Particularly interesting were the regional variations in responses, suggesting that proximity to and experience with Prop 65 implementation may influence expert perspectives. Industry sector also appeared to play a role in how experts evaluated the law’s utility.

These findings raise important questions about how we balance consumer right-to-know initiatives with practical implementation challenges.
