Using AI in Science Publication

Back to All

AI could have widespread effects on publishing, from data analysis to peer review.  This raises questions about ethics, reliability, citations and the integrity of conclusions.

Artificial Intelligence poses several unique challenges for scientific publishing. As AI tools become more sophisticated, they raise complex questions about authorship, research integrity, and the peer review process. For instance, AI-generated text could blur the lines between human and machine contributions, potentially complicating attribution and accountability.

When asked, “If AI was used in the process of generating a publication, should it be disclosed?” Our community’s discussion revealed that the majority of experts agree on the importance of disclosing AI use in generating publications to ensure transparency, integrity, and reproducibility. They recommend including this information in the methodology or acknowledgment sections. While a few believe that AI use does not require special mention or argue against its use in research papers, some feel the need for disclosure depends on the context and extent of AI involvement.

While there is ongoing debate in the scientific community, the ramifications extend beyond academia, with the potential to revolutionize fields from pharmaceutical research to climate science.
